Conditional creatures are really fun to make. They really stress making unique abilities rather than focusing on stats and numerics while still implementing game mechanics. Here's 6 creatures that do something nasty when dealing critical damage (knocking somebody unconscious, for those of you who don't play Into The Odd). Without further ado:
...Dons Itself Onto You
Animated Armor
Gilded armor that shambles around without a wearer. Wants a friend.
STR 15, DEX 10, WIL 5, HP 6
Lashes out with a armored backhand (D6) and a rapier (D8)
It, oddly enough, dons itself onto whoever is critically damaged. In 1 round, it will fly away with the wearer in tow. If anybody else hits the armor, it also hits whoever is inside. It stabilizes folk who are bleeding out, and it will take them to some forgotten closet or armory to boast to itself that it has a wearer once again until whatever is inside starves to death. The cycle repeats.
...Eats Your Fingers
Rawwretch
Obese pale humanoid the size of a child with too many chins and a gaping mouth. Wants raw meat.
STR 10, DEX 10, WIL 10, HP 3
Lashes out with teeth (D6)
It immediately eats 1D6 fingers from a hand, a 6 being the entire hand, although it will take an extra round to devour the entire hand. If you run out of fingers, toes will do just fine. These are children who become monstrous, spoiled and bored of conventional decadence.
...Nibbles At Your Spellbook/Casting Components
Magi Moth
A moth the size of a baby, come in flocks. Wants raw meat.
STR 5, DEX 15, WIL 5, HP 1
Does not attack, stays at a distance or flees. Easily scared.
When somebody gains magical power, magi moth will notice them like a small lamp in the night and flock around them at a distance. They hunger for the parchment in your spellbook, your weird knickknacks that give you power, they'd nibble at your brain if they had the chance. For adventuring folk, these moths can be a detriment to the party due to the noise they make. Many wizards build towers to avoid these nuisances.
...Curses Your Dreams
Madman
A spindly man with several daggers driven in his back and chains hooked to his skin. Wants vengeance on society.
STR 10, DEX 15, WIL 5, HP 6
Lashes out with daggers (D6)
When you're unconscious, they fervently whisper in your ear dark truths. They can do this for a max of three rounds. You are afflicted with a week of horrible dreams for each round they spend whispering in your ear, with 3 rounds being permanent. These are dreams of apocalyptic prophecies, eternal damnation, and things far to expansive for your mind to comprehend. You wake up screaming every night. GM NOTE, this is a good way to insert plot hooks!
...Brands You
Angel
Translucent and androgynous figures, beautiful black robes, many sets of golden wings. Wants to warn society of sinners.
STR 10, DEX 10, WIL 15, HP 9
Lashes out with swords (D8)
The angel brands you with its palm if it knows that you are a sinner. You need to do very little to be classified as such, as angels are obsessed with sanctimonious laws that dictate all things holy. If it sins, it will kill itself and return to whatever plane it came from. It can be convinced that other people nearby deserve branding more than you do, and it will pursue them first if you can prove it, possibly buying you time.
...Lays Its Eggs In Your Throat
Wolf Spider
Wolf-sized spider, covered in unblinking eyes, has a furry pulsating underbelly. Wants to BREED.
STR 10, DEX 15, WIL 10, HP 6
Lashes out with its pointy legs (D6)
It will take advantage of the unconscious state of your comrades and lay its eggs inside their throat. This way, the eggs grow faster and it ensures that your allies won't be getting back up without difficulty. Upon laying eggs in the throat, the target will die of asphyxiation in 1D4 rounds. The egg will hatch into another wolf spider in 1D4 days. Be careful...
